Vegan Mofo: Vegan KFC Style Coleslaw

Tastes like my childhood.
There is a very accurate copycat Kentucky Fried Chicken coleslaw recipe on the interwebs, but trying to veganize it proved to be a challenge since buttermilk is a key factor in the flavor profile. (Did I just say that?) I realized instead of replacing the buttermilk, the coleslaw just tasted better without a non-dairy substitute for it. I also toned down the sugar, because no one needs to eat that much sugar.

Vegan KFC Style Coleslaw Recipe
6 servings; prep time, 10 minutes

  • 1 bag of prepared coleslaw mix (about 6 cups)
  • 1/2 cup of Veganaise
  • 1/8 cup non-dairy milk
  • 2 TB white vinegar (cider vinegar works too)
  • 2 TB lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp onion powder (or hing)
  1. Dice coleslaw mix into the tiniest pieces possible. Make it into confetti! If you use fresh cabbage, mix in about 1/8-1/2 cup of shredded carrots, according to your preference.
  2. Whisk together remaining ingredients.
  3. Mix coleslaw mix with dressing and let sit in fridge to marinate. Overnight is best, but for at least an hour.
A spoonful or sugar helps the raw cabbage go down! Yes, she was eating a bowlful outside in a toy monster truck.

  1. Are you kidding me?! YUM!

True confession. A few months after going vegetarian (about nine years ago, well before going vegan) I caved and went to KFC one night. Chicken, coleslaw and mashed potatoes. I got sick, natch. Went back the next day for the coleslaw, which, it turns out I craved. Haven't had it in eight to nine years. Cannot WAIT to make this! LOL

  2. I have had the copycat recipe made with buttermilk (since I am lacto-veg) and it tastes just like the real one. This one is close though!

  3. Ha, I make the KFC coleslaw about once a year for nostalgia. The original recipe has way too much sugar, so I always reduce it too. And I just skip buttermilk (or any milk) since I hate to buy it. Still tastes very close.

I love comments! Thanks for saying hi!
